Christina F. Zawierucha, a devoted educator and beloved daughter, sister, and aunt, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, after a long illness. Born to the late Henry and Helen (née Pojanowski) Zawierucha, Christina carried their legacy with grace and dedication throughout her remarkable life.
Her journey began at Buffalo State College, where she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education and Reading Specialties. Christina’s passion for teaching blossomed into a distinguished 30-year career at Orchard Park Middle and High Schools, where she inspired countless students as an AP English teacher, guiding Honors and Regents classes with unwavering commitment. Beyond her local impact, she enriched young minds as an adjunct professor at Buffalo State and shared her expertise internationally, spending six months teaching at Beijing Normal School in 1988.
A Fulbright Scholar, Christina’s thirst for knowledge and cultural exchange took her across the globe to India, Egypt, and Japan, experiences that deepened her understanding of the world and fueled her lifelong love of travel. She also nurtured a joyful spirit through singing and dancing, joining the Chopin’s Singing Society and embracing the camaraderie of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society and the Knights of Malta.
Christina’s family was central to her heart. She is lovingly remembered by her sister, Felicia (Daniel J. DDS) Livingston of Rochester, New York, and cherished niece and nephew, Sarah C. and Gregory D. Livingston. She was preceded in death by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and former students who were touched by her kindness and dedication.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones on July 17, 2026, from 4 to 7 PM at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 5090 Transit Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on July 18, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the Church of the Annunciation in Elma, New York. Please assemble at the chruch
In honor of Christina’s memory, the family kindly requests that flowers be declined. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Fulbright Foundation, causes close to her heart.
Christina’s life was a testament to the transformative power of education, the joy of exploration, and the enduring strength of love and community. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know her.
