With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Bruce D. Chamberlin, a beloved figure in the Spencerville community, who passed away peacefully on June 29, 2025, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. Born on May 28, 1945, in Auburn, New York, Bruce was the cherished son of Sears Hill Chamberlin and Helen Virginia McCollum, and he was a sibling to brother Rich. Growing up on a dairy farm instilled in Bruce a strong work ethic and values that guided him throughout his life.

At the age of ten, following the loss of his father, Bruce’s life took a new direction when his mother remarried Kenneth Pickard, who served as the police chief in Jordan, New York. This relationship played a pivotal role in shaping Bruce's future aspirations. After completing his studies at Buffalo State College, he embarked on a remarkable career dedicated to law enforcement that spanned decades.

Bruce began his journey as a Special Police Officer in the Buffalo Housing Projects and later joined Erie Lackawanna Railroad's police force in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1970, he proudly became a police officer for the Cheektowaga Police Department, where he was known for his warmth and dedication. His time as a motorcycle officer, riding his beloved Harley, was among his most treasured memories. Over nearly 32 years, Bruce rose through the ranks, leaving behind an enduring legacy through initiatives such as the Field Officer Training Program and the establishment of the department's first S.W.A.T. team. He was appointed Chief of Police in 1990.  In that role he initiated and implemented a number of notable programs, including continued quality performance and community policing.  Bruce was a visionary leader who motivated, supported and mentored the officers who had the honor and privilege of serving under him.

Bruce retired in 2002 and relocated to Indiana, with his then fiancée Nancy, where he continued to serve the law enforcement community as an adjunct Criminal Justice professor and a civilian employee at the Avilla Police Department. His legacy of service lives on through his family, including his son Scott, his brother Rich, sister in law Jane and his wife Nancy,  who follow in his footsteps, and numerous family members who have embraced Bruce’s dedication to public service.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Bruce was passionate about many hobbies, from cowboy action shooting, hunting, reloading ammunition, reading, listening to a wide range of music, being a Civil War history buff and enjoying the company of his beloved Great Danes, Franklin and Tim, who often accompanied him to the Dairy Sweet for their milkshakes and pup cups.

Bruce is survived by his devoted wife Nancy, with whom he shared 29 wonderful years of love and companionship, along with his son Scott, his wife Carrie and his three granddaughters, Allie, Megan, and Julia. He held a special place in the hearts of his brother Rich, sister-in-law Jane, and two nieces, Melissa and Jessica, as well as many cherished extended family members.

Family gatherings were a source of joy for Bruce, who relished the moments spent with Nancy’s large family and their lively celebrations. Although the chaos of large gatherings initially felt overwhelming, he grew to cherish these moments and the love that surrounded them. Bruce's steadfast friendships with lifelong companions such as Bill Zenosky, Bill Dickman, and Bob Field brought him joy and camaraderie throughout the years.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Chief Glen Wills and the Avilla Public Safety Community for their invaluable support during Bruce's final moments. His love for his family and dedication to community safety will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.

Standing tall at 6'8", Bruce was a gentle giant whose quiet strength and calm presence offered solace in tumultuous times. His wisdom and the honorable example he set will continue to guide his loved ones.

Bruce was laid to rest at Leo Memorial Park on July 8th. The family will be present on Sunday July 13, 2025 from 12-2PM at the New Comer Cremations & Funerals 5090 Transit Rd. Depew, NY where a Memorial Service will follow at 2PM.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Bruce's honor may be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, supporting families of fallen first responders. Rest easy Bruce, though you have taken your watch in the loving arms of Jesus, we promise to carry forward the light of your love and guidance. Your legacy and love will never be forgotten.
